Each episode of “The SAUCE” radio show on DubLab (ES) includes “The Real SAUCE Section” where we expose listeners to an aspect of Hip Hop culture related to the music we play on the show. This aspect is called “crate digging”–finding classic or obscure music.
In the old days, DJs & producers would search through vinyl records (often stored in milk crates–easily acquired behind supermarkets) from their own collections or in record stores looking for “breaks.” A “break” is a part of a recording that may feature just the drums, a section where there are fewer instruments playing (also known as a “breakdown”) or merely that the DJ or producer finds this part of the track “interesting.” The whole track can be referred to as “the break” if it gets used in a popular or important track–such as The Honey Drippers’ “Impeach the President” which gets used as the drum beat for “Unbelievable” by Notorious B.I.G.
In the current episode of “The SAUCE” we begin “The Real SAUCE” section with “Impeach the President” and “Unbelievable” (about 22 minutes in.) The next couple of tracks are Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “You’re All I Need to Get By” and Method Man feat. Mary J. Blige “I’ll Be There for You/You’re All I Need to Get by (Puff Daddy Mix)” which share a lyrical theme and some musical elements.
Often “breaks” are tracks from the 60s & 70s like the previously mentioned tunes. However, sometimes they’re from an even later time period, like the final one in “The Real SAUCE” (1982) or even released within a few months of the resulting track (Jay-Z’s “4:44” used Hannah Williams & The Affirmations’ “Late Nights & Heartbreak” which came out less than a year before.) Getting back to the tunes in the show, Luther Vandross’ “Forever, for Always, for Love” provided a vocal hook for “Comfortable – The Path to Relief” by Median.
