Keyboardist, arranger, composer and musical director Bernard Wright passed away this weekend. To say that it is a great loss is an understatement.
Known for classic cuts such as “Master Rocker“, “Haboglabotribin’“, “Just Chillin’ Out” and “Who Do You Love” (which we feature in April 2022 on radio show “The Sauce“), Bernard also had countless collaborations with other artists. “Funkin’ for Jamaica” by Tom Browne is a standout, but a short list of people he’s worked with would also include Cameo, Miles Davis, David Sanborn and his godmother–Roberta Flack. Some of the folks who have sampled his music are no less impressive – Snoop Dogg, Yo-Yo, LL Cool J, Skee-Lo and The Yancey Boys.
His first three albums (‘Nard, Funky Beat & Mr Wright) are great examples of the 1980s “Jamaica (Queens, NYC) Sound” and are highly recommended.
